Printh nodded to Daphne and raised her saber. The Duchess backed away too. The match was over. Daphne tossed her saber to the ground. The crowd yelled and screamed, some in protest, others in glee.

“What an ending!” came the disembodied voice over the speakers. “The perfect record is no more!” More boos and yells from the crowd. “Ladies and scoundrels, make way for the champion of tonight’s fight so the Duchess can collect her prize!”

The crowd parted along the path that led to the stairs. The Duchess walked toward the stairs somewhat unenthusiastically as Printh melted into the crowd and disappeared. Turning off her saber, the Duchess reached up under her mask. A moment later, silver hair cascaded down past her shoulders, but the mask was left in place. A few whistles made their way above the tumult.

“Take off the mask!” someone shouted, but I didn’t need the Duchess to do that to know who was behind it.

Pria. It made sense. Printh had come to her rescue, but I guessed that she wasn’t happy about it. Pria might have officially won the fight, but we were all losers, me most of all. I had been so caught up in the fight that I had almost forgotten why Daphne was here in the first place—the password. She wasn’t getting it. Zeno would be furious, and unless Gina pulled out a miracle, we wouldn’t know which train car I was supposed to land on tomorrow.

Daphne stared at Pria, her face a mix of regret and anger, but Pria wouldn’t meet her gaze, choosing instead to stare down at the ground as she made her way to the front.

“We have our winner!” the announcer’s voice boomed amidst a renewal of cheers from the crowd. Most people followed Pria over to the stairway, but I turned my attention to Daphne. She had picked up her saber, and I could tell by the look on her face that the fight had carried far more baggage than I knew. She had known it was Pria all along. She had thought she was going to win and get the password. Now, the whole trip down here was for nothing.

The crowd started to thin as some of the Sinisters filtered out of the subway. It was time to go. I didn’t think Daphne knew I was there, and I preferred to keep it that way. Clearly, she could take care of herself, but I got the feeling she would go crazy if she found out I had followed her. I kept my distance.

A group of people passed in front of me and momentarily blocked her from my view. By the time they passed me, Daphne was gone.

A few yells made their way to me over the buzz of the dispersing crowd. I turned to see Daphne sprinting across the floor, shoving people aside. Several steps ahead, someone else was running. It was the tall man in the suit I had seen earlier. Daphne was chasing him.

I broke into a run, weaving in and out of the throng, doing my best to keep up without my hat flying off.
